Legacy Good Samaritan, built in the 1970s is known for its excellent care. In the Emergency Department (ED), 30,000 patients visit each year. More than 20% are over 65 years old. In an urban hospital, those with routine illnesses who did not have access to urgent or primary care were treated along side critically ill patients. The institution wanted to create a healing atmosphere for geriatric and urgent care patients, especially when it was remodeling its ED. The space needed to be gutted and remodeled in order to achieve the goal of creating a flexible, private environment for patients seeking Urgent and Emergency Care, Behavioral Healthcare, and Seniors. This had to be done while maintaining emergency care in the hospital. The updated design includes an exterior entrance with a covered walkway and convenient drop-off area that welcomes visitors upon arrival. It also activates the street. By cutting existing exterior masonry wall windows, the ED was able to receive natural light and have views of the healing garden. Natural materials, colors and lighting are used to create a calm environment in the interior.
