St. Francis Medical Center expanded its emergency department, a Level 3 trauma center, to meet the unprecedented growth of Colorado Springs. The ED has seen a 50% increase in the number of patients since 2008. It now serves over 47,000 people per year.
The ED expansion and relocation was part of a 168.580-square-foot multiphase $70 million expansion, which included new operating room, a renovated Level III NICU and shell space to accommodate future growth.
The modern ED adopted a split-flow care model with the goal of improving staff efficiency, patient satisfaction, and reducing patient waiting times. Early triage, better patient room assignment, clearer wayfinding and an improved layout of staff stations and resources were all used to achieve this.
