The Nappi Wellness Institute, located at the SUNY Upstate Medical University, in Syracuse, N.Y. adopts a new integrated and preventative model, recognizing that individual behavior and the social determinants are the primary influence on health and well-being.

The new ambulatory center includes primary care, speciality clinics, as well as community wellness services. This provides the Syracuse community a one-stop shop for many of its healthcare requirements.

The project, designed by Stantec in Washington, D.C., offers a flexible layout that encourages interdisciplinary interaction and engagement, allowing providers to work efficiently and effectively.

The five-story facility opened in June and houses 240 exam rooms and consultations for primary and special care of chronic diseases. It also offers lab and radiology, retail pharmacy services, behavioral health services for adults and children, and services for endocrinology, osteoporosis, and other conditions.

The project includes a 200,000-square foot facility that also houses the Center for International Health – a primary-care clinic for refugee adults and children; Inclusive Health Services – which provides outpatient and inpatient HIV-infected patient care; and the Joslin Diabetes Center.

The building is designed to meet International WELL Building Institute WELL Building Standards. These standards focus on optimizing well-being and health in seven key areas: air, comfort and fitness, mind and nourishment, water, and light. The Nappi Wellness Institute is the first healthcare facility to be WELL certified in New York State.
