The Players Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Nemours Children’s Health, Jacksonville (Florida)
Players Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Nemours Children’s Health offers specialized and comprehensive pediatric oncology and hematology care for children in Jacksonville, Fla.
The hospital will complete a 12,000 square foot clinic expansion and renovation in June 2023.
The project is located on the fifth floor of the hospital and includes a waiting area, a laboratory, exam rooms and consultation rooms. There are also five infusion bays that can be opened and three private rooms for patients with immunocompromised conditions.
Design of a pediatric cancer facility
Families who are dealing with pediatric cancer face a turbulent landscape of stress and anxiety.
This knowledge was the driving force behind Gresham Smith’s healthcare group in Jacksonville, which provided the architecture and interior design for the project. The goal was to create dedicated treatment and work spaces to provide medical providers the tools and resources they need to deliver quality care.
In addition, patients and their families are provided with positive distractions in public and clinical areas.
Positive distractions for young children
The furnishings and decor chosen were designed to create a warm and welcoming environment for the pediatric patients and families.
The artwork in the corridors and the rooms, for example, features images of nature, animals and abstract scenes that are uplifting and designed to attract the attention of children.
The seating was selected to encourage comfort and family connection in waiting rooms and treatment areas.
The lobby is decorated in aqua, yellow, green and red colors. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows offer a view of the St. John’s River that runs through downtown Jacksonville.
Patients’ respite areas
A dedicated arts and craft space was planned for young patients to be engaged and inspired.
Teenagers can take a rest in a special area that includes video games and a lounge.
