The HCD 10: Recognizing Dr. Scott Boden as a Clinician

Dr. Scott Boden began his work in Atlanta in 1992 after he arrived at Emory University. He was the chair of the Department of Orthopaedics and the director of the Emory Musculoskeletal Institute. He wanted to provide a holistic and convenient approach for services, while also creating a collaborative approach between clinicians and researchers.

In 2017, after many iterations, Emory moved its sports medicine division into a new 95,000 square-foot complex on the executive park campus. The complex was built in collaboration between the Atlanta Hawks basketball team and Emory. Boden was asked to head a taskforce to determine the best use of the adjacent land during this project.

The task force recommended the creation of a health innovation area, which would house Emory’s musculoskeletal services. This would fulfill his long-held goal to combine orthopedics, spine care, rehabilitation, imaging and ambulatory surgery under one roof.

Boden’s vision became a reality in October last year with the opening the Emory Musculoskeletal Institute, occupying 180,000 square feet.

Boden said that the positive response of patients to the first move was what inspired him to continue improving the patient experience for several decades.

Boden, a senior editor at Health Design, said earlier this year: “We finally had the freedom to design an entire facility without any constraints.”

The new facility will also join the existing Emory sports medicine complex on the campus, and other service lines could be added in the coming years to further evolve the executive park campus.
