Creating Designs Catering to Pediatric Patients with Complex Conditions

Dell Children’s Comprehensive Care Clinic in Texas

Dell Children’s Clinic, located in Austin, Texas serves a special population of children who have chronic medical conditions and disabilities. The children in this clinic have complex medical conditions such as cerebral palsy and autism. Many also use assistive medical equipment like wheelchairs, wheelchair-strollers, feeding tubes and ventilators.

These children are often accompanied to their clinic appointments by parents, family members and private duty nurses. The visits usually last several hours, as the families meet with a multidisciplinary team consisting of primary health care providers, dieticians and social workers who coordinate care.

The clinic was located in an Austin storefront for five years. The small exam rooms in the clinic couldn’t accommodate the equipment, personnel, and providers that were involved with each child’s treatment, adding extra stress to already stressful appointments.

The clinic was able to solve its problems thanks to a chance encounter with Rosedale School. This school is part of Austin independent School District.
