Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow, Scotland
Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow, Scotland set out to renovate its surgery department through a multi-phase renovation. The first phase was the waiting area, reception and corridors.
The reception area was little more than a few plastic chairs placed around the perimeter. The project team worked with the international design firm Graven in Glasgow to create a new space that was infused with positive distractions.
Laura Darling created a series large-scale illustrations that tell the story of the hospital based on stories from former patients, caregivers, and staff.
The artwork includes Victorian ladies, Edwardian nurses and other characters that all allude to the rich history of the hospital. There are also 11 animal characters, each one associated with a specific operating theatre and used to guide in the corridors.
The reception area will be completed in December 2023. It also includes benches and seating areas, along with a variety colorful furniture in playful shapes. The next phase of the project will involve renovating 11 anesthesia rooms in the department.
